Work Shirt - Olive/Brown Cotton Heavy Twill Plaid

$384.00

The Work Shirt in olive/brown cotton heavy twill plaid pairs asymmetric chest pockets with reinforced elbows and cat’s-eye buttons. Engineered Garments combines several sewing techniques in one shirt, preserving the practical details of vintage workwear while giving each fabric version a different character. The heavy checked twill brings a strong American casualwear character to this version.

About the design

Introduced by Daiki Suzuki in 2000, during Engineered Garments’ second season, the Work Shirt takes details from American work shirts of the early twentieth century. Big Yank is a key reference, particularly in the deliberately mismatched chest pockets.

The peaked “mountain” pocket recalls a compartment intended to keep a cigarette packet accessible and away from perspiration. The larger companion pocket includes a stitched pen holder. Cat’s-eye buttons and reinforcement at the elbows and collar add further links to utility clothing.

Different parts of the shirt use different sewing methods: single stitching at the hem, placket and pockets; triple stitching at the side seams, armholes and back yoke; and double-needle stitching at the collar and cuffs. The cuff construction allows adjustment around the wrist without pleating. These are small details, but together they explain the care that goes into a familiar work-shirt shape.
