Engineered Garments’ 19 Century BD Shirt pairs white/brown stripe cotton broadcloth with a long, rounded hem, deep side vents and a button-down collar. Single-needle sewing and details drawn from nineteenth-century dress shirts give this familiar wardrobe shape its distinctive construction. White and brown stripes run through a smooth cotton broadcloth with a soft sheen.

About the design

Introduced by Daiki Suzuki in 2002, the 19 Century BD Shirt brings together the Oxford button-down’s place in Ivy style and construction details from nineteenth-century dress shirts. References included J. Press, Brooks Brothers and Boston Preparatory Company, alongside an antique shirt given to Suzuki by a vintage dealer.

Single-needle tailoring is central to the design. The label’s “Single Needling Tailoring” wording points to a slower sewing process with one visible row of stitching outside and two inside at the finished seam. Small gussets reinforce the base of the side seams, where the rounded, overlapping shirttail hem opens into deep side vents.

The additional sleeve panel recalls an earlier manufacturing solution: narrow fabric rolls required shirtmakers to piece together enough cloth for the sleeve. A two-piece back yoke and fabric gathered into the cuffs add further construction detail. These features preserve the ingenuity of older shirtmaking within a garment designed for everyday wear.
