EG Workaday Salvage Smock

The Salvage Smock traces its roots to the U.S. Navy’s mid-century decontamination gear. Often called a “Gunner” or “Salvage” smock, the original garment was issued to crews tasked with some of the most dangerous operations at sea. Oversized and protective, it was designed to pull on quickly over other layers, with a generous hood that shielded the wearer from vapor, debris, and the unpredictable conditions of the deck.

As the jacket transitioned from strict naval function to surplus stores and into civilian wardrobes, its unique silhouette became a quiet favorite among film costumers and outdoor minimalists. The absence of a front closure created a clean, uninterrupted façade, while the drawcords and large patch pockets offered both mobility and practical storage.

Designer Daiki Suzuki updates the smock through a thoughtful lens, retaining the essential character of the piece while refining it for daily utility. The wide cut and pullover shape remain faithful, but subtle shifts in proportion, stitching, and fabrication give it new purpose as a versatile layer. Built in fabrics like Indigo Chambray that soften with wear, the Salvage Smock connects a formidable naval past to modern ease. A simple tool that still feels ready for work.`
